Small sign
Yotson modified a small LED banner sign to be controlled by an Arduino. After hooking it up to the Dockstar and reprogramming SpaceBot it is now located on the speaker next to the 19" rack and displays messages from IRC users (!wall and !speak). Code is available on github, based on
this earlier code.

Large sign
DeDaan brought in a larger sign. We plan on modifying this as well to have a second banner; if this is working, the smaller one will probably be used to indicate space state to the outside world from behind a window above the front door.

The larger sign contains a separate control unit, programmed using a separate keyboard with a DB-9 like plug. It is attached to a PCB containing the LEDs with a 20 pin flatcable.

The control unit ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/bjornlammers/8425066292/in/photostream ) contains the following ICs:
* NEC D8049HC 195 (pre-programmed CPU)
* Motorola SN74LS373N ( http://www.alldatasheet.com/datasheet-pdf/pdf/5714/MOTOROLA/SN74LS373N.html )
* Toshiba TC5517APL (Static RAM, probably where the program is stored)
* unmarked IC, probably an EPROM
The Toshiba and the unmarked IC are in a socket, the other two are soldered to the PCB.

The LED panel ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/bjornlammers/8425075284/in/photostream ) contains:
* 6 * SN74LS273N ( http://www.alldatasheet.com/datasheet-pdf/pdf/5696/MOTOROLA/SN74LS273N.html )
Yotson modified a small LED banner sign to be controlled by an Arduino. After hooking it up to the Dockstar and reprogramming SpaceBot it is now located in the 19" rack and displays messages from IRC users.

The control unit contains the following ICs:
* NEC D8049HC 195 (pre-programmed CPU)
* Motorola SN74LS373N ( http://www.alldatasheet.com/datasheet-pdf/pdf/5714/MOTOROLA/SN74LS373N.html )
* Toshiba TC5517APL (Static RAM, probably where the program is stored)
* unmarked IC, probably an EPROM
The Toshiba and the unmarked IC are in a socket, the other two are soldered to the PCB.

* <s>Nice big red button?</s> automatic > manual
* Manual override is possible, login to dockstar and screen -r to SpaceBot
* <s>Motion detection @ cam?</s>
* Detection on locks, both front and back door. This is the current trigger.

Updates
10 april 2012
Since we have internet, we can now have updates! First step is the iBook G4 that runs a small Java IRC bot that can be controlled from the console by typing 'o' or 'c' (for 'open' and 'close'). It then updates the space status in the #nurds topic. <s>Next step is a GUI (Swing).</s>

12 april 2012
An LDR has been connected to the half-broken Arduino and the iBook has been freed of its duties. buZz installed Java on the Dockstar and the software runs there now. The Arduino has been connected and everything works. We also proved that the bot can send DMX commands, currently fading in the only lamp connected as the space opens and fading it out as it closes.

18 april 2012
DS18B20 has been connected! You can now query the lights status, temperature or a summary using !lights, !temp and !status.

19 april 2012
DS18B20 no longer functioning :( stopped working when soldering everything to a board. LDR gives wrong readings. Unfortunately, we can't seem to find out what's wrong...

23 april 2012
Faulty soldering of the 100 kOhm pull-down resistor for the LDR was at least partly to blame. LDR works correctly again and SpaceBot has been restarted. DS18B20 has been removed for now.

25 april 2012
Everything has been resoldered and a spare DS18B20 is used now. Everything seems to work again.

29 april 2012
Complete redesign of sources, which makes it easier to integrate new media. Twitter updater added. Space API JSON added.

30 april 2012
Added temperature to the Space API JSON.

october 2012
Status is now controlled by the locks.

Sources
<s>All Arduino sources have been checked in to the Subversion repository 'nurdspace' under /spacebot/arduino</s>
https://github.com/bjornlammers/nurdspace/tree/master/spacebot-arduino

Further steps
Further steps may include:
* <s>connect an Arduino to the iBook and access it using a Java API (you'll need http://silveiraneto.net/2009/03/01/arduino-and-java/ );</s>
* <s>connect a Big Red Button to the Arduino to control space status;</s> automatic > manual
* <s>LDR close to the fluorescent lighting connected to the Arduino;</s>
* <s>complete redesign of code, it's messy as hell now;</s>
* <s>redesign of hardware, it's messy as hell now;</s>
* <s>incorporating the temperature sensor (currently on the Teensy) on the Arduino;</s>
* <s>fix and/or replace DS18B20</s>
* <s>fix LDR</s>
* <s>detection inside the locks connected to the Arduino</s>
* separate lamp to announce space status (connected to the dimmer);

Sources
All Arduino sources have been checked in to the Subversion repository 'nurdspace' under /spacebot/arduino

* <s>redesign of hardware, it's messy as hell now;</s>
* <s>incorporating the temperature sensor (currently on the Teensy) on the Arduino;</s>
* <s>fix and/or replace DS18B20</s>
* <s>fix LDR</s>
* detection inside the lock connected to the Arduino; -> works for the back door, working on front door
* separate lamp to announce space status (connected to the dimmer);

If people are interested, I can teach them the basics of Android programming. The interested people are available June 20th, so that will be the definitive date. We'll start at 20:00.

Prerequisites:
* a computer with Eclipse & Android SDK installed
* basic knowledge of programming in an OO language (Android SDK is Java-based)
* an android device would be nice, but is not really necessary (the SDK includes a pretty good emulator)

Interested:
* buZz (dates: ?)
* Joozey (20th of June?)

Sources
All Arduino sources have been checked in to the Subversion repository 'nurdspace' under /spacebot/arduino

An LDR has been connected to the half-broken Arduino and the iBook has been freed of its duties. buZz installed Java on the Dockstar and the software runs there now. The Arduino has been connected and everything works. We also proved that the bot can send DMX commands, currently fading in the only lamp connected as the space opens and fading it out as it closes.

Sources
All Arduino sources have been checked in to the Subversion repository 'nurdspace' under /spacebot/arduino

Sources
All Arduino sources have been checked in to the Subversion repository 'nurdspace' under /spacebot/arduino

* detection inside the lock connected to the Arduino;
* <s>complete redesign of code, it's messy as hell now;</s>
* <s>redesign of hardware, it's messy as hell now;</s>
* separate lamp to announce space status (connected to the dimmer);
* <s>incorporating the temperature sensor (currently on the Teensy) on the Arduino;</s>
* <s>fix and/or replace DS18B20</s>
* <s>fix LDR</s>

Flok dumped a slot-loading iMac (referring to the CD or DVD ROM drive). Because the machine won't boot it is not clear what model this is exactly, but probably at least a G3/350 with 64 MB of RAM and a 6 GB IDE HDD. This machine uses normal PC-100 as opposed to the iMac Rev B.
