The clients can be anything that is able to make an xdmcp connection. We currently have one PoC HP terminal running in zaal1 with archlinux. This terminal will connect to ts.vm.nurd.space during boot. We should standardize this on Debian.
The clients can be anything that is able to make an xdmcp connection. In zaal1, three terminal setups are configured. Just power them on, and login using your LDAP account. By default, you will be presented with an Xfce4 desktop, but you can also select a different one in the login menu.

Summary

Using available terminal servers at the space, rollout a system that provides Xorg based terminals, using a managed desktop. Place clients around the space so members can always open up a linux desktop without requiring a nearby laptop.

Architecture

The dektop itself runs as a virtual machine on erratic. The clients connect to an xdmcp service running on the aformentioned virtual machine

Desktop

Currenty the desktop runs as a debian 12 vm on erratic, with the hostname ts.vm.nurd.space. The machine is configured to use LDAP logins and has the home directories mounted read-write. The server is currently configured with the following services:

  • LightDM for logins
  • Xfce4 for desktop
  • Firefox as the browser

The following additional windowmanagers are installed

  • Windowmaker
  • Enlightenment
  • Blackbox

If you need additional software install, let the BOFH team know!

Clients

The clients can be anything that is able to make an xdmcp connection. In zaal1, three terminal setups are configured. Just power them on, and login using your LDAP account. By default, you will be presented with an Xfce4 desktop, but you can also select a different one in the login menu.
