Moving the infra rack
Petraea got us a really nice 22U 19" rack, and we want to move our core infra into this rack. Furthermore, the rack is going to be moved to a different location, meaning we can make the kitchen/bar a real kitchen/bar again :) This page is used to track the progress of this action
Decisions
Rack location
There are two places where we can place the rack. We need to decide which place its going to be.
Option 1
The first location is next to the door towards zaal 1 (preferred by: )
Pro:
- Aestetically pleasing
- Barrier between printer hoek and the hallway
Con:
- Unable to access the rear part of the rack
Option 2
The second location is where the envisiontec currently is (preferred by: r3boot)
Pro:
- Able to access both sides of the rack easily
Con:
- Needs the envisiontec to be gone
Cabling
We have a bunch of cables that we need to replace, since the cable is too short to reach the new location of the rack. An overview of all cables that run to/from the infra rack, see the picture below:
Cable to | Replace? | Notes |
zaal-1-switch-1 | Yes | lacp trunk |
zaal-1-switch-2 | Yes | lacp trunk |
zaal-1-ap | Yes | |
bar-ap | Yes | |
netgear-bar | Yes | |
switch-3dprinters | Yes | |
phone-rookhok | No | |
zaal-2-switch | No | |
gamers-phone | No | |
fritzbox | No | Will be replaced with other cables in a couple of weeks |
zaal-3-ap | No | |
netgear-keuken | Yes |
Note that there are likely more cables that run around the space that need to be replaced, so this list might increase.
Rack configuration
The rack will be filled with heavy stuff in the bottom, and switch(es) + routers in the top (on a shelf). In the most above position in the rack, there is a built-in crashcart with a monitor, keyboard and mouse. All things that are placed need to be on a shelf or mounted in the rails. The bundle of cables that runs to the rack needs to have enough built-in slack space (1 to 1.5M) to make it possible to move the rack around. This slack should be kept as tidy as possible and preferrably done using bundled cables. Empty slots in the rack need to have a blindplate.
The goal here is to have a tidy rack. This means, no loose cables, no unneeded cable slack, connections between the space and the rack go via the patch panel, power left, network right and no shortcuts.
Cleaning
Currently, the equipent is very dirty, so when we move them to the new location, we need to open up everything, and clean all inlets/outlets/fans/radiators/cooling fins, BEFORE, we place the equipment in the new rack.
Power
A single power feed will be delivered to the rack. From there, we split out to a multitude of (preferrably switchable) power outlets. All cables should be made to fit preferrably. Cables should be labelled.
Network
Network cables that run throughout the space towards the infra rack need to be mounted on a patch panel and need to be secured to the rack frame. The cables that run between the switch and the patch panel need to be made to fit.
Blind plates
Since black blindplates are boring, we need to do something nice with them. Add your ideas below:
- Give each blindplate its own custom color
- Find a bunch of cool stickers and put them on the blindplates.
Needed parts for the rack
- shelf(s)
- patch panel(s)
- VGA 19" kvm switch
